Almost every single article about losing weight and getting healthy informs readers to avoid drive through windows like the plague and that they need to do all of their own cooking. This is literally very true. Now and then, though, you definitely do not want to make a whole meal for your family or even just for yourself. Sometimes you just would like to hit the drive through on the way home and call it a day. There isn’t any reason that you shouldn’t be authorized to do this and not be suffering from remorse about slipping on your diet. This can be done because an abundance of the popular fast food spots are trying to make their menus healthier now. Here’s how it’s possible to eat healthfully when you are at a fast food spot.
Concentrate on the sides. It wasn’t that long ago that French Fries were your only side dish choice at a restaurant. Now many of the fast food selections have been widened quite a bit. There are lots of salads available today. You can get chili. You can get baked potatoes. You can choose fruit. There are plenty of healthy options that do not include things like putting something deep fried into your body. Instead of the pre-determined “meal deals” try to create a meal from side dishes. You’ll maintain your calorie and fatty food count very low and escape commitment.
Logic states that that one of the best ways to stay healthy and balanced is to avoid the drive through and never eat fast food. While this is usually a good idea all you need to do is make a few good selections and going to the drive through isn’t anything to worry about–when you do it in moderation. Sometimes the best thing is to let someone else make your dinner. If you choose healthy items, the shame usually associated with hitting the drive through shouldn’t be so bad.

The ingredients needed to cook Slow Cooker Southwestern Chicken Soup:
- Prepare 3 pounds bone-in chicken pieces (I like dark meat - more flavor. :) )
- Take 6 cups water
- Provide 1 small onion, cut into 1-inch pieces
- Use 6 cloves garlic, peeled and lightly crushed
- Provide 2 medium carrots, cut into 1/2-inch thick pieces (I like to cut them big for slow cooking so they don't disintegrate and still retain some texture)
- Prepare 1 medium bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces (I happened to use the Hatch chilies I roasted the other day, but they're seasonal and sometimes hard to come by even when they're in season)
- Use 1 large stem celery, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
- Take 1 (15 oz.) can black beans, rinsed and drained (optional - I don't always care for beans in this soup - but add a 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt to the recipe if you add the beans)
- Provide 1/2 a 15 oz. can of corn (or 1 cup frozen or fresh corn kernels)
- You need 1/2 a 15 oz. can of tomatoes
- You need 1/2-1 teaspoon cumin
- Get 1-2 teaspoons dried oregano
- Prepare 2 bay leaves
- Prepare 3-3.5 teaspoons kosher salt to start
- Prepare 1-1.5 Tablespoons fresh squeezed lime juice
- Use 1/4 cup chopped cilantro (optional for the cilantro haters, of course)
- Use 1 teaspoon fish sauce (optional, but recommended)
- Use optional garnish: fried tortilla chips or strips, chopped fresh chilies, onions, cilantro, avocado, and lime wedges
Steps to make Slow Cooker Southwestern Chicken Soup:
- Dump all but garnish ingredients into your slow cooker and give it a few good stirs.
- Cook on low for 7 to 9 hours, or high for 5 to 7, depending on how hot your slow cooker gets.
- It's always nice if you can give the soup a few gentle stirs throughout the cooking process, but if you can't manage that because you're out of the house, then you can give it a stir and adjust the seasoning as necessary as soon as you get home. This will give the soup some time to more evenly and thoroughly absorb flavor before you sit down to enjoy it.
- I like it with a little steamed rice, some chopped onions and cilantro on top, a good extra squeeze of lime, and a few lashings of Tapatío. :) - - Enjoy!
